Ukrainian delegation in Vienna: strengthening international cooperation for decarbonization and environmental transformation

Who will finance climate protection and energy transition, and how? How private capital can be
successfully channeled into environmental projects to ensure a sustainable future? How this can help
us reach our Paris climate agreement goals by using Austria’s experience? These are questions that
are extremely relevant today for Ukraine.

To accumulate the best solutions, learn the European experience, attract Austrian companies and
organizations to the implementation of joint green initiatives, promote the energy transformation of
all sectors of the economy of Ukraine and create an effective system of incentives for energy
efficiency not only in the utility sector, but primarily in industry, the Association of Environmental
Professionals PAEW initiated the holding working visit to Vienna.

From September 12 to 15, participants and experts of the PAEW Association worked out solutions
to accelerate changes and strengthen Ukraine’s energy independence.

The delegation includes representatives of the Ministry of Reconstruction, the Ministry of Energy,
the Office of the President, specialists of Ukrenergo, Atmosfera, DTEK, Center LTD, Astarta-Kyiv,
Zakhidnadraservice, Energoatom, as well as scientists and experts.

“We are grateful to the European partners for their support and to the Association of Environmental
Professionals PAEW for the opportunity to participate. We have one task – Victory and restoration
of Ukraine. It is important that Ukraine choose environmentally friendly recovery, which takes place
using the best available technologies and practices, which we had the opportunity to see here in
Austria,” said Oleg Bota, director of Center LTD.

 

During the visit, the participants met with the Austrian Federal Minister for Climate Protection,
Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, Leonora Gewessler, within which Mrs.
Gewessler shared Austria’s experience in the field of energy efficiency, RES, decarbonization and
environmental transformation and the specific mechanisms that have already created and operating
in Austria.

Thus, the Ministry of Climate Affairs of Austria has launched an initiative that supports financial
companies on the way to climate neutrality.

 

Thus, the country is taking an important step towards the implementation of climate change
mitigation goals for companies in the financial sector, as defined in the Paris Agreement.

 

The Green Finance Alliance is one of the first global government-backed initiatives to call on
financial companies to make voluntary commitments to climate goals and therefore specific criteria
for their core business.

Austria’s future energy supply continues to depend on a combination of traditional fossil and
renewable energy sources. By the way, 80% of Austria’s gas supply in 2021 was provided by russia.

Energy efficiency plays a central role in Austria’s energy policy. The transition from fossil fuels to
efficient renewable energy sources requires large investments. Along with public funds, private
capital must increasingly be directed to activities that will contribute to the preservation of the
climate.

Energy efficiency has additional benefits for the Austrian economy, particularly in foreign trade
(less energy is imported) and the labor market (energy efficiency measures are labor intensive).
Both at the level of the federal government and at the level of the federal states, Austria has
introduced a number of instruments and measures to save energy and improve energy efficiency. In
addition to regulation, these measures address research areas, technological development and aimed
at facilitating market penetration, as well as information dissemination and financial incentives for
the implementation of relevant measures.

Energy efficiency measures contribute to the following objectives: security of energy supply,
ecologically clean energy supply, economically efficient energy supply, social acceptance of the
energy supply system.

It should be noted that Austria's main climate and energy goals include:
– climate neutrality by 2040.
– 100% electricity from renewable energy sources with clear development targets for all
technologies by 2030.
– adoption of the Law on the Development of Renewable Energy
– + 27 TW of renewable electricity by 2030: + 11 TW of solar energy, + 10 TW of wind energy,
+ 5 TW of hydropower + 1 TW of biomass energy.

technologies and RES, in order to achieve to achieve the stated climate and energy goals,
sustainable development, environmental protection, adaptation to climate change and ensuring a
stable future of the country.
