International Climate Protection Day celebrated worldwide on May 15

Have you ever thought about why our rivers are dwindling or streams are disappearing altogether, why it snows in May, and in December it rains and thunders, why there are more frequent flooding or waterlogging in cities and where outbreaks of infectious diseases come from. All this is directly related to climate change.

The biggest problem that awaits us in the future is the lack of quality drinking water and food. Excessive consumption of pesticides and agrochemicals, an endless number of spontaneous landfills, especially in water protection and coastal zones, mindless deforestation and improper management – all this, together with heat waves, cold, snowfalls and downpours, leads to outbreaks of various diseases, both human and biodiversity, to deterioration of the quality of soils, drinking water, droughts, soil degradation, landslides, mudslides, floods, and all these are called risks.

That is why to draw the attention of the international community to the problem of climate change, May 15 is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Climate Protection. Despite the fact that this day is not an official holiday, nevertheless, it is very important for each of us. Global warming, increased ozone content in the atmospheric layer, natural disasters, changing weather conditions on the planet — all this leads to the deterioration of the Earth’s climate and, as a result, has a negative impact on people’s food, life and property security, has adverse effect on  natural resources and balanced development of states. Climate protection is one of the global problems facing humanity today.

Adaptation to climate change can occur at any level of society – from the individual, company to the national and international levels. Adaptation measures can take different forms and formats and the contribution of each of us is important. At the end of April, the “Center LTD” company made its contribution to the preservation of the climate, having recently planted its “climate” tree in the center of the city of Lviv.

It should be noted that Ukraine is among the ten leading countries in the climate process, which was one of the first to publish its Low-Carbon Development Strategy until 2050. This document is an instrument of public administration and formation of climate-responsible behavior of businesses and citizens. Its presence is the basis for attracting innovative, highly effective technologies, investments and funds of international technical assistance.

In particular one of the ways  Ukraine meets the necessary tasks for effective management of forest resources is carbon crediting. Carbon credits are a kind of quota in the form of a certificate for a country or organization to emit a certain amount of greenhouse gases, it can be traded if the full rate is not used. In other words, today the owner of such a certificate has the right to emit one ton of CO₂ or an equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas. At the same time this certificate can be sold on the international market at its current price. Credit trading at the international level is a voluntary carbon market. Buying carbon credits for various projects is a standard global practice.
