Forum “Eco-transformation of subsoil use-2023: legislation, decisions, best practices” was held in Lviv

Yesterday in Lviv, the industry forum “Ecotransformation of subsoil use-2023: legislation, solutions, best practices” organized by the Association of Environmental Professionals “PAEU” took place.

Oleg Bota, director of the Center LTD Company, took part in the forum, and in his speech he highlighted the issue of balancing the interests of the environment and investors and the issues of environmental impact assessment. The effectiveness of the permit system and procedure of the EI A in Ukraine is criticized for a number of issues discussed at the Forum. To address these issues, there is a need for greater transparency, stronger enforcement, and greater public participation in the permitting and environmental impact assessment process. In addition, the Government should take measures to ensure adequate funding of the EIA procedure – training and methodological materials on EIA industry standards.

Environmental impact assessment procedure in Ukraine is an important tool for determining the potential environmental impacts of a proposed project and implementing measures to minimize or mitigate these impacts. This allows balancing the interests of the environment and investors, as well as protecting the environment for future generations.

Among other issues discussed at the Forum: how to stop quarries: ESG aspects, what a subsoil user should know about EIA, how quarries should be developed while preserving biodiversity, is there a chance  for peat extraction in Ukraine, how to effectively engage mining companies with communities for social development, post-project monitoring in martial law conditions, all about special water use, rent payments and many other applied aspects of mining business in Ukraine.

Among those present are leading industry experts, environmentalists, representatives of ministries, specialists of local self-government bodies responsible for environmental issues, representatives of specialized departments of regional state administrations, business and the public.
