Production phase covers all processes – from the use of natural resources to the product on the store shelf (after the sale of the product, its packaging falls into the category of waste and the process of its disposal must also be taken into account).

Carbon footprint is an official environmental concept recognized by international organizations. It expresses in numbers how many kilograms of greenhouse gases are produced by a certain organization, activity or product. Emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other harmful gases are usually included in the calculations. The result is presented as the so-called CO2 equivalent.

The goal of implementing the carbon footprint concept is to make humanity aware of the scale of its impact on the environment and climate change.

How is the carbon footprint calculated?

There are several methods for calculating the carbon footprint: ISO 14067, PAS 2050, GHG Protocol, PEF, AFNOR BP X30-323-0, EN 15804. The most universal and common methods for calculating the carbon footprint are PAS 2050, developed by the British Standards Institute, and the international standard ISO 14067:2013.

The PAS 2050 calculation method determines the level of emissions for specific products and services. It should be understood that the calculation of the carbon footprint requires a comprehensive approach. For goods, calculation includes their full life cycle from raw material extraction to disposal.

ISO 14067 is a standard that provides guidance on assessing and verifying the carbon footprint of an organization or project. Carbon verification involves a third-party audit to ensure that the carbon footprint calculation methodology used for the product complies with ISO 14067. This verification process in the first instance is a mandatory step and ensures that the carbon footprint calculation is accurate and reliable, and can help increase transparency and trust in companies that want to inform consumers about the environmental performance of their products.

5 steps to calculate the product carbon footprint:

Determining the purpose of calculation: you need to determine what the carbon footprint is being calculated for. For the product as a whole, for a specific production process, for the entire life cycle of the product (from extraction of raw materials to use and disposal) or for the organization/enterprise as a whole.

Collection of data on all aspects of product production including costs of raw materials, energy, transportation, production, packaging, sales, use and disposal.

Determination of CO2 emissions: the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, in particular CO2, in tons of CO2 equivalent (tons of CO2e) for each stage of production and use of the product, including emissions that are related to energy production, fuel use, assembly, etc.

Reporting and Analysis: the report should display the product’s carbon footprint and analyze the results to inform consumers of the product’s environmental responsibility.

Calculation is carried out for the enterprise’s annual accounts or, if necessary, for a separate product or process.

Calculation of the product’s carbon footprint is carried out by specialized consulting companies using the above methods. Specialists of “Center LTD” help you calculate the product’s carbon footprint and develop measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the product’s carbon footprint.
