This process has acquired such a scale that it is beginning to threaten the economic and social development of the countries of the world. We must quickly learn to respond to this challenge of globalization and develop and implement climate change adaptation measures.

In 2015, at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris, in the context of sustainable development, a transition to a low-carbon economy model was declared, which is able to resist climate change, provided that the potential of forests is used to mitigate climate change by absorbing greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide gas, and carbon retention in forest ecosystems.

At the international level, the important role of the forest as the main terrestrial absorber of greenhouse gases is recognized, and in this respect, the forestry of Ukraine has significant potential, which are still remains underestimated and unrealized.

If we consider the greenhouse gas absorption potential only for the lands of the forest fund, then according to the official national reporting of Ukraine to the UNFCCC (Ukraine’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory 1990-2020 – Kyiv 2022) from 1990 to 2020, the amount of carbon dioxide absorption varied from 51, 8 million tons of CO2 equiv. in 1999 to 24.4 million tons of CO2 eq. in 2016, and for the last 5 reporting years (2016-2022), the amount of annual absorption amounted to an average of 26.5 million tons of CO2 eq., or an average of 2.55 t of CO2 eq. per hectare of forest land.

The given figures show that forestry in Ukraine is the only sector of the country’s economy that absorbs more carbon than it emits. This important circumstance should be properly understood in society, it is necessary to look for ways how to effectively manage forest resources, which in turn will positively affect the sustainable development of Ukraine as a whole and improve the chances of adaptation to climate change.

It should be noted that Ukraine is among the ten leading countries of the climate process, which was one of the first to publish its Low-Carbon Development Strategy until 2050. This document is a tool of state management and formation of climate responsible behavior of businesses and citizens. Its presence is the basis for attracting innovative, highly effective technologies, investments and funds of international technical assistance.

One way for Ukraine to meet the necessary challenges for the effective management of forest resources is carbon crediting. Carbon credits are a kind of quota in the form of a certificate for a country or organization to emit a certain amount of greenhouse gases, it can be traded if the full rate is not used. In other words, today the owner of such a certificate has the right to emit one ton of CO2 or an equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas. At the same time, this certificate can be sold on the international market at its current price. Credit trading at the international level is a voluntary carbon market. Buying carbon credits for various projects is a standard global practice.

The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program is the world’s most widespread international voluntary greenhouse gas credit program, developed and implemented by the non-profit organization Verra.

All projects and programs must go through a thorough development and evaluation process before being enrolled in the VCS program. VCS standards define the rules and requirements that projects must meet in order to be certified. In addition, the VCS program includes three other important components: an independent audit, a calculation methodology, and a unified project registry system. Each VCS Program project also goes through a public comment period during which anyone can comment on whether the project meets VCS Program standards.

Projects and programs registered in the VCS program receive carbon credits known as Verified Carbon Units (VCU). The VCS Quality Assurance Principles ensure that all carbon credits reflect greenhouse gas emissions reductions that are real, measurable, independently verified, valued and transparent. The VCS Program is managed and overseen by the VCS Program Advisory Group and the Verra Council.

VCS projects implement a wide range of measures such as waste management, renewable energy sources, environmentally safe production, “green” technologies, improved management of forests, land and water resources, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment.

The VCS program is endorsed by the International Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Alliance (ICROA) and complies with the ICROA Code of Best Practice.

Auditors of Center Ltd., Ukraine’s largest company in the field of environmental consulting, verify your carbon footprint according to the ISO 14064 standard, which contains clear instructions and requirements for quantifying and verifying emissions in the greenhouse gas inventory.

CCF verification is open to companies of all sectors and organizations. It is aimed at anyone who wants to contribute to climate protection, increase public confidence about their CO2 emissions and improve their external image by focusing on sustainability and climate management.

Contacts for providing an individual proposal for verification according to ISO 14064: 79026, Lviv, Sakharova St., 41, 380 96 781 05 37, eco@center-ltd.com.ua

Today, climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity.
